Fragment Studies is a series of coloured pencil drawings that isolate fragments of Renaissance portraiture. Each drawing focuses on a partial section of the face, isolated and suspended in open space.

The drawings withhold completion. Faces remain partial, identity is uncertain, and proportion is unsettled, creating moments of recognition alongside ambiguity.

Colour and process shape the experience. Layers of pencil build slowly, drawing attention to surface, detail, and the intimate scale of each work. Flesh is not rendered naturalistically. Instead, colour moves across the fragment in fields and gradients, blue shifting into depth, green flattening or unsettling the surface, red vibrating against its complement. Though the forms remain recognisable, these colour choices introduce a subtle tension, allowing the fragments to hover between familiarity and ambiguity.

The series presents open images, fragments of faces, fragments of history, inviting observation, reflection, and quiet attention to the act of looking itself.
