About

“My work always contains elements of fun, the strange, the playful, and the curious.” - Maria Pelton

There are certain images that return to my work time and again, such as an intriguing face, the intricate form of an insect, a time-worn vessel from another era. Each carries its own emotional weight and symbolic potential, silently threading through different pieces as part of a recurring visual language.

These motifs are more than aesthetic choices, they act as vessels for deeper meaning.  A portrait, for instance, reveals more than appearance, it offers a window into a person’s inner world, their unique psychology. By contrast, an object may seem imbued with a quiet soul or the trace of a human presence. Insects often serve as powerful metaphors for life cycles, decay, and transformation. Even the most ordinary items can take on personality, hinting at meanings that reach beyond their original purpose. By assigning human qualities to these varied motifs, I explore deeper themes of character, identity, and individuality.

This exploration is shaped by a wide range of influences, including art history, portraiture, still life, and the natural world. I’m particularly drawn to expressive faces, unusual or grotesque forms in nature, and striking contrasts between beauty and the bizarre. Together, these elements reflect my ongoing fascination with ambiguity, contradiction, and transformation.

Somewhere between intention and instinct, my mischievous artworks seem to develop a life of their own, balancing between light and dark, the serious and the surreal. Through this playful ambiguity, I invite you into an imagined world, a space where overlooked objects and strange characters eerily come alive.
